Cruise The Melaka River Cruise is
45min boat ride on Sungai Melaka with audio commentary. The cruise offers
new perspectives of the historical city centre, Chinatown, Kampong Morten
and other places in Melaka. There are stops at private museums where one can get a deeper understanding of the local culture including their costumes and crafts like embroidery work. The houses are fine examples of Malay architecture, with sweeping staircases in the centre and a veranda. You
can also see the replica of a pirate ship, the Eye On Malaysia Ferris wheel,
the abandoned Cathay cinema as well as the old express bus terminal. There
is also a replica of a royal windmill and a fort, complete with cannons
around the walls. The other bridges are Chan Boon Cheng Bridge, Ghost-bridge of Melaka, Old Market Bridge and Jalan Hang Tuah Bridge. Along the way the boat will also pass through the Maritime Museum, which is housed in a replica of the Flor de La Mar, the Portuguese ship that Alfonso de Albuquerque traveled in after his successful capture of Malacca. Visitors who wish to board this 45 minute long cruise may do so from 2 departure points. The first is from the Malacca River jetty located near the Dutch Square or the Spice Garden, located at the Hang Jebat Bridge. The other is from Muara Jetty, next to Quayside Heritage Centre, close to the Maritime Museum easily recognisable by the replica of the Portuguese ship Flor De la Mar. The boats are comfortable,
with the bigger one being able to accommodate 40 people and the smaller one
20 people. There are two types of cruises. One offers recorded commentaries
and the other has a tour guide on board. Normally a minimum of eight
passengers is required before departure.
Built and operational since April 2008, the tower was named after the mythical keris, Taming Sari, belonging to Malaccan warrior, Hang Tuah. Standing at 110 metres, the cabin accommodates 66 people (no standing room) for each viewing session which lasts about 7 minutes. The viewing deck reaches only as high as 80 meters for the visitors to experience a revolving 360° panoramic view of Melaka. It takes about 3 minutes to ascend to the top and another 3 minutes to descend.
Throughout the whole ride, a pre-recorded narration is played. One can witness the spectacular birds-eye view of Bandar Hilir especially the core zone of UNESCO Heritage Sites like St Paul's Hill, Dutch Square, Porta De Santiago (A' Famosa), Cultural Museum as well as Melaka Straits, Eye On Malaysia, State Mosque and Melaka Island.
