Lumpur
There are several principal shopping precincts in the city. For
budget to mid-range shopping, head to Petaling Street (in Chinatown) or Bukit
Bintang to enjoy a wide range of fashion, electronics and other commodities.
KLCC is an upmarket shopping location, known for the Suria KLCC mall nestled
between the Twin Towers while Mid Valley is an exciting one-stop destination for
shopping parked in a strategic area of Kuala Lumpur. There is also the unique

MARKETS OR "PASAR MALAM"

A novel experience for overseas visitors is the night markets or 'pasar malam'
which begin their trading activities in the late afternoon. These open-air
markets feature hawker stalls that sell a variety of local produce, foodstuff,
clothing and cakes, Haggling is a common practice. Street artists and
traditional medicine vendors are an entertaining sight here.
NOTES ON SHOPPING IN K. LUMPUR
Business Hours - Shops generally open from 9.30 am to 7.00
pm while supermarkets and department stores open from 10 am to 10 pm. The bigger
stores also remain open on Sundays.
Currency - The Malaysian Ringgit (RM) is the standard unit, divided into
100 sen (cents). Currency notes are in denominations of RM1, RM2, RM5, RM10,
RM20, RM5O, RM100. Coins are in denominations of 1 sen, 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen
and 50 sen
Money Changing - Foreign currency and travellers Cheques may be changed in
all commercial banks during banking hours:
Monday to Fridays 9.30 am to 3.00 pm / Saturdays 9.30 am to 11.30 am
Licensed money changers at the airport, international hotels and within the city
sometimes offer better rates than banks.
Travellers Cheques are also accepted by hotels and major departmental stores but
banks give the best rates.
Credit Cards - Major credit cards are accepted in leading stores, hotels and car
rental agencies.
Tips for Shoppers - It is wise to compare prices before you buy to ensure you
get the best bargains. Prices in the bigger stores are usually fixed although
bargaining is still practised in smaller shops and road side stalls.
Check for the correct voltage in electronic and electrical goods. Malaysia uses
220 volts. Most stores, however, often sell electrical goods without plugs which
may be fitted on request. Most electrical items also carry a one-year warranty,
so please ensure you have your warranty card.
Export of Antiquities - Antiquities may not be exported without a licence from
the Director-General of the Museums Department.
