Exhibition / Art ~ The Prudential Malaysian Eye exhibition

A contemporary art project featuring a unique and exciting collection of artworks from emerging Malaysian artists. The exhibition will showcase the works of 21 artists, a seminal art reference book featuring some 75 Malaysian artists, and a series of programs around creative education. Some of the works will gain international exposure, by being featured at START, a contemporary art fair which will be held at the Saatchi Gallery, London from 26-29 June 2014.

Religious Festival / Hindu ~ Rama Navami

A Hindu festival, celebrating the birth of Lord Rama and marks the end of the nine-day Chaitra-Navratri celebrations. It is marked by continuous recitals with temples and family shrines being elaborately decorated with many followers marking this day by fasting through the day followed by feasting in the evening, or at the culmination of celebrations

UB40 are a British reggae/pop band formed in 1978 in Birmingham, England. The band has had more than 50 singles in the UK Singles Chart, and has also achieved considerable international success. As ne of the world's best-selling music artists, UB40 have sold over 70 million records. The ethnic makeup of the band's original lineup was diverse, with musicians of English, Scottish, Irish, Yemeni and Jamaican parentage. The band's initial lineup lasted for 30 years from the band's formation in 1978 until frontman Ali Campbell's departure from the band in 2008. Since that time, two other founding members (Mickey Virtue and Astro) have also left the band, and the trio of Campbell, Virtue, and Astro have since formed UB40 Reunited

Exhibition / Expo ~ The Star Health Fair 2014

Organised in conjunction with the World Health Organization’s World Health Day, it is one of Malaysia’s largest health fairs, incorporating a wide range of health-promoting activities and products. The exhibition caters to a growing number of health-conscious Malaysians and creates awareness on current health, fitness and lifestyle trends. There will be many activities available, including health and lifestyle talks, health campaigns driven by NGOs, and interactive activities for all ages. This includes the early years for those planning to start a family, expecting couples and those with infants and young children. The aim is to help create awareness on childcare to facilitate the experience of parenthood. There will also be activities that encourage younger adults to look after their health, such as healthy and balanced meals for a healthier life, looking after the body, and even family health and planning. Of course, issues that are becoming more prevalent in modern society will be highlighted. So be prepared for tips on how to eat healthy and stay in shape, or how to get back into shape. There will also be a deluge of information on the modern scourges of society, such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and so on. Ageing issues will not be ignored, and the exhibition will contain elements that share how we can cope and better prepare for ageing

Sports / Contest ~ The Live Great Challenge
Date: 11 (Fri) - 13 (Sun) Apr 14


This takes place in conjunction with The Star Health Fair 2014. The challenge is a six-stop obstacle course that includes the Vertical Wall, Pallet Haven, Incline Wall and the Web of Rope. Contestants who complete the course in the fastest time over the three days stand a chance to take home RM1,500, RM1,000 and RM500. Entry is free but participation is in pairs of either single or mixed gender and participants must be 16 years old and above. There will also be a mini version for children from the ages of seven to 15, featuring six mini obstacles. Apart from that, there will be a Health Bar providing sampling and nutritional information from exhibitors.

Outdoor / Fiesta ~ Pet Fiesta Expo Malaysia

Taking place for three days, the Hawaiian-themed event will see a host of activities including a fashion show for cats and small animals (rabbit, chinchilla and hamsters), an international cat competition as well as various pet food, fashion, accessories and healthcare promotions on offer. There will also be a club gathering of dog owners and their dogs, showcasing popular breeds like the Husky, Chow Chow, German Shepherd and French Bulldog to name a few.

Sinbad is a wonderful new musical for the whole family set in the fun-filled and exciting world of the Arabian Nights. In our story Sinbad arrives in the city to find it under the spell of an evil vizier who has imprisoned the true king and enslaved his beautiful daughter Yasmin.
It doesn’t take Sinbad long to join with the citizens to overthrow this menace. Along the way he meets the magical Fatimah, the grizzled old General and a host of colourful characters. Featuring 18 original songs, a cast of 40 and a 9 piece band Sinbad is the first truly Malaysian Australian Co-production featuring artists and creative team composed of the best both countries have to offer.

The Panguni Uthiram festival falls in the month 'Panguni' (March-April). This month is special because of the star 'Uthiram' and 'Pournami' occurring together. The ancients chose Uthiram to convey to humans that it is for underlining the glory of Grahasta Dharma (married life) and.is the day when most divine weddings had taken place. On Panguni Uthiram, in all places where Lord Subramanian has a temple, his devotees carry in a Kavadi the requisites of Puja for him, in fulfillment of vows.
 



Religious Observance / Buddhist ~ Songkran

Songkran has traditionally been celebrated as the New Year for many centuries especially in Thailand. The most obvious celebration of Songkran is the throwing of water. Thais roam the streets with containers of water or water guns (sometimes mixed with mentholated talc), or post themselves at the side of roads with a garden hose and drench each other and passersby. This, however, was not always the main activity of this festival. Songkran was traditionally a time to visit and pay respects to elders, including family members, friends, neighbors, and monks. If you are staying in KL, head on to Wat Chetawan from 2.30pm onwards- and bring extra sets of clothes in your car as you would surely be splashed wet with water.

The Hindu New Year's Day commences on the first day of the month called Chaitra or Chithirai. It falls on the first day of the Tamil month of Chithirai, thus it as also known as Tamil New Year or Chaitra Vishu. During this time the Sun enters the zodiac sign of Aries (Mesha Sankranti). An occasion for celebration for Tamils (and so with Tamils here in Malaysia), greetings of “Puthandu Vazthukal”, (Happy New Year), are exchanged with fervor on this day, which is supposedly the day when Lord Brahma (The Creator of the world, according to Hindu mythology) started creation. The ladies adorn the entrances of their houses with ‘Kolam’ (design made with rice flour) and deck the doorway with mango leaves
 



Religious Observance / Sikh ~ Vaisakhi

The most important religious festival in the Sikh calendar, which stresses that men are created equals. The event also marks the birth of the Khalsa order. It is also traditionally celebrated as a harvest festival in India where farmers rejoice after a bountiful year. Sikhs, wake up early to take baths and say prayers. Dressed in colourful turbans, veils and salwar kameez, they head to the gurdwaras (Sikh place of worship) to offer prayers. There would also be a scrumptious spread of Punjabi fare and vegetarian meals for devotees as well as visitors who joined in the celebration. gurdwara committees also organise visits to orphanages, old folks homes and charitable organizations

Jersey Boys is based on a true rags-to-riches story of four Italian-American chaps, who went on to become one of the most successful pop groups in America – Frankie Valli&The Four Seasons. The four – Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi, started out in the club circuit in New Jersey in the late 1950s before hitting it big. Written by Elice and Brickman, the show conceptualised with the help of Gaudio. It was staged on Broadway in 2005 and continues to attract audiences worldwide.
When Desmond or Des McAnuff directs a stage production, it never fails to win some kind of award. As the director of Jersey Boys, the 62-yearold has earned rave reviews for the musical. In his stage productions, the American-Canadian’s style is characterised by the use of stage machinery for added effect, rather than the nuances of the spoken word, which explains why his musicals are bestsellers.

Written by prolific writer, Koji Hasegawa. The play tells a story of a conversation between a teacher (played by Japanese artiste and educator – Doppo Narita) and a Yakuza. The Yakuza’s son has been missing from school and the teacher, has been contacting the Yakuza father of Hiroshi, Yuichi Nosaka (played by award winning Singaporean artiste and educator – Najib Soiman). The afternoon is filled with drama, humour, and mystery as the two unfold a story of history that they shared together and find themselves bonded by more than just the boy.

Exhibition / Art ~ Back from Planet Luvox

The works in the exhibition are resulted from Hasanul Isyraf Idris’s preoccupation with the meaning of life and death and the spiritual and the physical. Luvox is one of the brand names of Fluvoxamine, a type of anti-depressant drug that the artist has been taking since the early 2014 to help recover from a dark moment in his life ignited by the unfortunate passing of his mother. The exhibition is more than a story of bouncing-back in life through the aid of a commercially-available drug, but is actually the artist’s attempt to understand his collection of memories

Religious Festival / Christian ~ Easter

A key doctrine in Christian theology is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter Sunday is observed as the day Christ was resurrected. Prior to Easter, Christians observe what is known as ‘The Holy Week’. The Holy Week commences with the service of Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday literally means a Sunday Service where everybody is given a blessed palm leaf or a cross of palm leaves. The continuance of the Holy Week is observed on Thursday evening known as Maundy Thursday. Maundy Thursday is when Jesus ate his last supper with his disciples before he was betrayed.

The spirit of the dance infuses two of the three works on this program. Much of the music Khachaturian wrote as incidental music for Lermontov's play Masquerade is dance music. Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances are seldom danced, but their exceptionally brilliant orchestration contributes significantly to making this one of the composer's finest scores. In between comes Scriabin's early Piano Concerto, with its echoes of Chopin and Rachmaninoff.

A National holiday observed in Malaysia, the day is celebrated by Buddhists which marks three momentous events in Buddha's life - his birthday, enlightenment, and achievement of Nirvana. These two romantic favourites, Brahms's Violin Concerto and Tchaikovsky's Pathétique Symphony, were composed just a few years apart in the late nineteenth century. Each is a powerful and profoundly moving musical experience. Brahms's concerto is widely regarded as one of the two greatest ever written for the violin (Beethoven's is the other), while Tchaikovsky's hyperemotional symphony exudes dark colors, melancholic themes, fiercely defiant outbursts and poignant dissonances.
